What is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a disorder where the tissue that lines your uterus also grows outside of the uterus, including around the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and bowel. With each menstrual cycle, the displaced endometrial tissue thickens and bleeds. Without a place to go, that tissue collects and forms painful implants or lesions. Doctors can only speculate about what causes endometriosis.

Since symptoms vary so much from woman to woman, endometriosis can be tough to diagnose. Dr. Madanes uses a laparoscope to view your pelvic area and biopsies any implants he finds to determine if endometriosis is present. If you do have endometriosis, you can get relief with medication or surgery.

What are the signs and symptoms of endometriosis?
In endometriosis, intensity of symptoms do not always coincide with the severity of the condition. Some women with extensive endometriosis may have no symptoms, while patients with minimal endometriosis may have severe symptoms. One or more of the following can indicate endometriosis:

  • Excessively painful periods
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Painful bowel movements or urination
  • Painful intercourse
  • Infertility

Doctors classify endometriosis into four stages based on the location, extent, and severity of scar tissue and implants in your pelvic area. The stages are I–minimal, II–mild, III–moderate, and IV–severe.

Most women who have endometriosis either have the minimal or mild variety. Infertility can occur at any stage, as the exact causes of infertility with endometriosis — along with its precise relationship with fertility — is unclear. In severe cases of endometriosis, damage to the tubes or another pelvic organ can explain infertility, while milder cases of the disorder might cause infertility through an immune system response.

Can I get pregnant if I have endometriosis?
Many asymptomatic women discover they have endometriosis only after they have trouble conceiving. It is often during comprehensive infertility testing, including laparoscopy, that Dr. Madanes diagnoses endometriosis. The good news is that with Dr. Madanes’ help, women with early stage endometriosis can usually conceive within a short period.

To improve fertility in more severe cases, Dr. Madanes may conduct surgery to remove lesions or use Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), including intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in-vitro fertilization (IVF), to help women with endometriosis conceive.
